How to Report and Prevent Skype Scams and Skype Malware

Skype Scam

Been scammed? Get even with these high-tech criminals by reporting and blocking them at once after being victimized.  Stop these Skype scams lurking around the web! Blocking and reporting these scammers helps keep the network free of users who have wrong intentions.

Skype provides customer service help to victims of scam by simply going to their support request page.

Prevent yourself from being scammed.  Here are some famous Skype scams and malware:

  1. Click fraud.  A program that imitates a legitimate user.
  2. ‘lol is this your new profile pic?”
  3. Trojan virus.  You unintentionally download and install this to your computer by clicking on links.
  4. “Skype Toolbar for Outlook” email attachment.  It installs spyware on your computer.
  5. “Skype Security Center” a spam message used in phishing information.
  6. Nigerian Advance Fee Fraud and other Lottery scams asking you for money.
  7. “Army Officer in Afghanistan” a well-known scam that claims they are a member of the Armed Forces.

In our fight against cybercrime, it is important that we are aware of what to do against them.  Many of us have experienced receiving suspicious emails and calls.  Most cases we are caught unaware that we are being scammed.  Many have lost money, resources and have been exploited and these criminals have to be stopped.

Here’s what you can do to prevent yourself from being scammed:

DO NOT answer calls from users you don’t know.  If you have already answered a call, it would be best to disregard it and DO NOT follow any instructions from them.  DO NOT visit links or websites mentioned on the call.  Change your privacy settings to only allow calls from people on your contact list.  It is important to block the user that called you and report them for abuse.

Be cautious and vigilant.  Do not open emails you don’t recognize.  Ignore suspicious names, demanding commands, weird words, letters and numbers or phrases that don’t make sense at all.  You can change your Skype Settings into “Invisible” to avoid receiving spam.

Protect yourself.  Download a reliable anti-virus program to protect you from scammers.  Regularly update your security features on your computer.  Also, upgrade to the newest Skype version.

In a nutshell, to avoid these Skype scams and malware, make sure you have up to date internet security software installed on your computer.  And like your mother always tells you, “Never talk to strangers” even on the web.

How to Start Your Online Jewelry Shop with Skype [Skype Store]

One key measure of an online jewelry maker’s success is its degree of customer Skype Storeengagement.  With a few creative twists of metal wires coupled with careful choosing of brilliant gems and using Skype to talk to customers, you can create special custom-made necklaces and bracelets that would’ve compelled Cleopatra to place an online order.

SET UP YOUR SHOP. There are a lot of online stores that encourage jewelry makers to set up shop and start selling their creations. It does not take much to showcase your jewelry and earn cash from your handiwork:

  1. JEWELRY.  Gather all the bracelets and necklaces that you have fashioned in all shapes and colors and take stock. Give each piece a name or code, a brief description and a price according to the materials and time you spent making them.
  2. PHOTOGRAPHS. Showcase each piece in professional looking photos. If you can’t afford a professional photographer, you can search online for helpful tips on taking well-executed pictures using an SLR or a digital camera. You can even ask a friend to model each piece so customers can have an idea as to its dimension.
  3. WEBSITE. Maintain your own website to serve as your online store or sign up with many websites that allow you to sell on their sites like Etsy. They charge minimum fees and only keep a small fraction of your profit.

USE SKYPE. Unfortunately, you don’t have a monopoly of talent nor are the simple steps listed above secret. Your beautifully crafted jewelries may give you a following and earn you a tidy sum but you can exponentially increase your market with the use of Skype.

Online shoppers browse through thousands of pages of jewelry photos and only stop at sites that catch their attention. Your potential buyers will definitely stay if they can to talk to you about a ring that they fancy. Receiving calls through Skype will give you a better chance of closing a sale.

But you can’t be there all the time to take a call. A practical alternative is to make a recording of your jewelry items’ descriptions or of your FAQs, using video call recorder apps like SuperTinTin, that potential customers can download and watch. This will give a more intimate feel of your items and your shop and create satisfied and loyal customers.

BE DIFFERENT. The Internet has allowed thousands of handcrafted jewelry businesses to market their products all over the globe. And there is no shortage of channels from which to sell, like online stores Etsy, Ten Thousand Villages or iCraft. You may get noticed because of your talent but you will get satisfied and loyal customers because you took the time to talk to them.

How To Setup A Skype Music Lesson

skype music lessonMusic is the connection to one’s soul and it’s no surprise that more people are getting interested in enhancing their artistic side. However, getting a music teacher that suits the student’s needs can be difficult and it will get more difficult if the latter is always on the move.

As a music teacher, the possibility of setting up an online music lesson might have already crossed your mind, but the difficulties associated with it might have also stopped you from pursuing the business. Well, the good news is, you can earn online with the help of Skype. Just follow the basics below and you’ll be good to go.

Setup Your Online Business

One of the first requirements that you need in setting up an online music school is the vast experience in teaching music lessons. This will make it easier for you to adjust and deal with the trial and error process that comes with teaching music via Skype.

Another helpful tip is to start reading articles about the success of other people’s online music school so you’ll have an idea how to start such a business, deal with changes, and survive to success.

Download Skype and other helpful programs

Of course you’ll need Skype to make this business a possibility so if you still don’t have it on your computer, search the net for links where you could download the app. You don’t even have to pay for anything because Skype is a free web and mobile app.

You may also want to consider using Skype video call recorder programs, such as SuperTinTin, so you could record your lessons and send them back to your students so they could review it for the next module.

Setup Paypal or other online accounts for payments

Yes, we’ve all heard the terrors and dangers of making payments online and this may be one of the reasons why establishing an online music school is something you’re afraid to do. Well, fret no longer because there’s always PayPal — the easiest and safest way to send and receive money online. But if you still don’t trust financial transactions being done over the internet, you can have the payment deposited directly to your bank account.

Setup your teaching studio

How someone or something looks is one of the first judgments that we make thus, it is only of utmost importance that you make your studio look professional and tidy, even if you’re only conducting your lessons online.

Another thing to keep in mind is to keep your camera at an angle that shows the clearest and best view of your demonstrations.

Prepare necessary paperwork

After everything’s been arranged, take enough time to come up with a definite Terms & Conditions that your student must agree on and sign. This should include your policies on payment, schedule of lessons, cancellation and what to do in the case of technical interruptions. Try also to include the software and equipment that your students should have to make the lessons more interactive and effective.

Teaching music online with Skype will include changes and adjustments the same way you do with your usual teaching material. Once you get the hang of it, surely you’ll come up with techniques of your own that are efficient and effective for you and your students.

How to Solve Unauthorized Billing and Subscription on Skype

Let’s face it, all of us hate paying for something we did not order, purchase or subscribe to.  Our hard-earned money has to be spent on things valuable and useful.  Each time we receive our bills, our instinct is to check for errors or discrepancies and to find unauthorized billing items you did not purchase or subscribe to can really be irritating.

Unauthorized Billing and Subscription

Skype had explained reasons for some unexpected charges in your Skype bill. According to them, it can be caused by recurring payments.

For example, Skype’s auto-charge setup, it automatically tops up your Skype Credit once it falls below a certain amount to prevent you from running out of Skype Credits.

Also, charges may be due to your subscription.  Skype subscription is renewed automatically at the end of the initial period.  These two are automatically reflected on your bills without your authorization.

Be also aware of credit card fraud.  Your card may have been used by someone else to purchase or pay for something.

We must take a proactive approach in order to avoid unauthorized billing and subscription problems.  Below are a few tips and suggestions.

Cancel Auto-recharge and Subscription to avoid recurring payments.

You can choose the cancel Auto-recharge setup and cancel your subscription on your Skype menu.

Report immediately any lost or stolen Credit and Debit cards.

Also report any unusual and unauthorized transaction on your card.  Remember that Credit card holders are protected by company policies against fraud.  You will not be held liable for the transaction once it is properly reported.  On the other hand, for Debit card users, your banks are required to reimburse your money if it was proven to be debited fraudulently.

Contact Customer Service.

Skype also offers investigation to locate and block the fraudulent movement in your Skype account.  You can Contact Customer Service and you will need to provide the following information:

  1. First six and last four digits of your credit card used to make the purchase.  Do not send full credit card number.
  2. Cardholder name as written on your card
  3. Issuing country
  4. Exact dates or order numbers of the fraudulent charges on your credit card statement.

The next time you encounter a situation like this, I suggest you keep your calm.  Try to understand all the details of the situation and your problem will surely be resolved in no time.

Using Hidden Emoticons in Skype

Chatting on Skype is more exciting once you learn how to use its hidden emoticons features. By default, users can only access 72 Skype emoticons but if you want to express more emotions while chatting, below are some suggestions on how you can use these hidden smileys while chatting on Skype.

hidden emoticons

Curse Without Having To Swear Out Loud

Topic of conversation got you frustrated? Why not express how you feel by typing (banghead) or (headbang) to insert an emoticon banging its head on the wall? Or if you’re having a rough day and you just want to curse the Universe without having to shout it out loud, type (fubar) to insert an emoticon pointing its finger, or (swear) for displaying a character with “swear words” continuously coming out from its mouth.

Invite Friends Over For  A Drink

Thinking of inviting your friend over for a drink or two? Make your invitation more creative by using the drunk-looking emoticon by inserting (drunk) to the chatbox. You can even add a smoking character by typing in (smoking), (ci) or (smoke) along with your message.

Rock On To Your Favorite Music

Show your love for rock music by putting in (rock) to your message to insert an emoticon banging its head to some rock music, the same way you would do if you’re watching a rock concert, live.

When Saying ‘Enough is Enough’

If you’re friend has shared too much gruesome information by using a Skype Recorder such as SuperTinTin to show you his most recent injury, send an animated character putting its hand over its eyes repeatedly, by typing (tmi) and pressing enter. There won’t even be a need to think of how you’re going to put how grossed out you are into words, without hurting his feelings.

Use your hidden emoticons

Most of the hidden Skype emoticons in version 5.5 include, as mentioned before, adult theme such as drunkenness and swearing. With the animated characters, expressing your emotions in chat is made easier.

How to Fix Freezing Screen Shares on Skype

Bothered by stopping, static video, fading out sound and choppy video calls on Skype’s Screen Sharing? You’re not alone. Most Skype users have experienced the same thing.  It is the “Freezing Screen Sharing problem.”

Screen Sharing is probably the most popular and used feature of Skype being used on most households and even businesses.  It is also more likely to be the one to experience most setbacks.

Freezing Screen Shares

At first, the video starts to get a little static or choppy.  The sound fades out even when the volume is pumped up.  Then, it stops completely until the video call totally hangs up and you’re frozen.

Let me help you determine the Cause and Possible Solutions to the “Freezing Screen Sharing problem.”

First, let me cite the Causes.

  • Slow internet connection.  The best connection speed is at least 300kbps. More is absolutely better.
  • Insufficient Computer Memory. Have at least 512 MB of Memory or more to be able to enjoy Skype.
  • Download and upload speed. The recommended download and upload speed for Skype is at least 128kbps. That is at least, the faster the better.

Next, allow me to present you with some Possible Solutions & Recommendations to the “Freezing Screen Sharing problem.”

  • Restart or Re-install Skype.  Download Skype’s  newest version that works best with Screen Sharing.
  • Have an efficient system. An efficient system should have 1 GHz CPU, at least 512 MB of Memory (or more), 300kbps download and upload speed (or more).
  • Close unused windows on the desktop.  Close other unnecessary windows on your desktop while using Skype.  Too many opened windows slows down the performance of your system.
  • Upgrade, Upgrade, Upgrade! It is highly suggest that you keep your gadget updated.  I strongly recommended that you upgrade regularly to keep up with the changing times.

You can now continue collaborating with a friend or colleague once you’ve had your “Freezing Screen Sharing problem” on Skype.  Record those important moments through SuperTintin, a recording tool for Skype.  It lets you capture and playback conversations when you need it.

The sound of your voice is probably the most important component of a call.  It would be very irritating if you can hear the person on the other end of the line perfectly but he can’t hear you one bit.  Skype users often come across audio problems on their calls and have tried numerous ways to fix it.

Skype Microphone Fix

Many Skype users experience almost the same problems.  The most common of them is with their microphones.  It’s the “your microphone is too quiet” problem.  It is when you could see or hear the person on the other end, but they couldn’t hear you.

I‘ve tried to discover the best possible way to resolve this and I’ve come up with a few suggestions on how to fix this problem.

Suggested Fix “Your Microphone is Too Quiet” Problem:

Adjust the Volume Settings of your computer. On the lower right corner of the screen, double click on the speaker icon and a dialogue box shall appear.

On the “Options” drop down menu, select “Advanced Controls”.  Another dialogue box shall appear, on the lower portion select or check the “Microphone boost” or “Loud” option, then “Close”.

Make sure all the Balance controls are set in the middle and Volume controls are set to maximum.  Also, make sure no Mute buttons are checked.

Try using a different microphone.  A microphone is the best way to ensure that the your voice will be heard. There are a number of Skype compatible microphones and headsets available in the market today.

Re-install Skype.  If you think that the problem is with your Skype settings, try re-installing Skype on your computer.

Update your drivers and check your soundcard.  Errors in your soundcard may cause problems with your microphone.  Each type of microphone needs the correct driver to run properly.

Skype Audio Configuration.  “Automatically adjust microphone settings” should always be checked.  This allows Skype to set the microphone settings at its best performance.  Make sure that the correct microphone is selected as the input device for Skype.

Check for mute buttons and loose plugs.  Be sure to check to see if you microphone is not muted. Also don’t forget to check if the microphone is plugged all the way to its socket.

Some of these suggested fix may work and others may not. All depends on the device, software, driver, soundcard or microphone you are using.

After being able to solve your audio problems, try recording audio and video Skype calls with SuperTintin.  SuperTintin is the best audio and video online recording tool for you.
